The Best Care Always! Campaign

The Best Care Always! Campaign (BCA) is an initiative aimed at improving patient safety and spreading improvement methods across all South African hospitals. The BCA was initiated in August 2009 and more than 190 hospitals are enrolled, from both the public and the private sector. The campaign encourages the active implementation of strategies to reduce hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) and to improve antibiotic stewardship. Active implementation involves the establishment of an improvement team at the hospital, establishing and refining measurements for health care-associated infections and inappropriate antibiotic utilisation, testing and refining specific changes to reduce HAIs and improve antibiotic stewardship, and measuring to see if a change is an improvement.

The BCA is open to all hospitals and health care professionals who wish to participate. The only requirements for joining this learning collaborative are willingness to implement evidence-based interventions at a faster pace and to share information, experiences and successes with others in the spirit of learning, and the commitment to measure results as far as possible.
